Two days after being benched by Coach Steve Spagnuolo in the second half of the loss to the Tennessee Titans, guard Richie Incognito had to take off his St. Louis Rams jersey after playing all the five years of his career for the team.
“As with all other personnel moves, this is what we felt was in the best interest of the team at this time,” Spagnuolo said in a statement. “We appreciate Richie’s efforts and we wish him the very best.”
I have to say Incognito’s being released has been long expected but a problem of time. The five-year veteran was drafted in the third round in 2005 by the Rams and has frequently landed in trouble for playing long after the whistle and was named the dirtiest player in the NFL earlier this year by The Sporting News.
What caused him to be benched during last Sunday’s game was two personal foul penalties for head-butting players in Titans jerseys in the first half, repeating what happened in the opener at Seattle.
But Incognito just does not think there is anything wrong with his anger management, saying if he were a gentlemanly lineman he’d probably be out of the NFL, or perhaps playing for former Rams coach Jim Haslett in the United Football League.
