The Oakland Raiders seem to believe that they struggled to move the ball consistently and have the second fewest points in the NFL because they played the games without second-year wide receiver Chaz Schilens, so they felt the long-lost excitement when Schilens wore back his Raiders jersey and returned to practice last week.
That’s quite a lot of hype for a second-year player with only 15 career catches. But he is quarterback JaMarcus Russell’s most trusted and Schilens realizes the responsibility the team has placed on him and welcomes the pressure.
“I feel if they’re going to put me out there, it’s my job to go out there and make plays,” Schilens said Wednesday. “I’ve always said that. If they’re putting me out there they have confidence in me, and I’m not going to go out there and not do my job. I need to go out there and make some plays and help the team win.”
The one who remains calm is Coach Tom Cable, who tried to downplay the impact of Schilens’ return by calling him “one piece” of the offense. The coach said that the status of the wide receiver for Sunday game will not be decided until Saturday.
