Celtics forward Wallace missed Monday game

The Boston Celtics forward Rasheed Wallace missed Monday night’s game against the Atlanta Hawks because of soreness on his left forefoot. Brian Scalabrine replaced him to start the game.

The decision was announced by Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss a few minutes before the game. He said that Wallace had trouble pushing off when he jumped so coach Doc Rivers decided to give him the night off.

“He got to start working out today for the first time,” Rivers said. “Now it’s just a conditioning thing. We want to make sure he gets strong and back in shape because he literally hasn’t done anything. We figure 10 days to two weeks, that’s what it’ll take.”

Averaging 10 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, Wallace was originally a replacement to Kevin Garnett, who hyperextended his right knee on Dec. 28 while playing against the Golden State Warriors. According to Rivers, Garnett will not wear back his No. 5 Celtics jersey to play basketball until at least 10 days later.
