Steelers DE Smith to be out for extended time with shoulder injury

Getting injured during Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions, the Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Aaron Smith was evaluated Tuesday and may have to be out for an extended time with the injury.

Smith’s agent, Peter Schaffer, told The Associated Press in an e-mail that he was awaiting a doctor’s report. But the team has been prepared for an extended absence of the No. 91 Steelers jersey. Schaffer said that Smith would be able to play this year but did not mention whether it would be during season or in postseason. Having 13 tackles and two sacks in five games and blocking a field goal attempt during the Steelers’ 13-10 victory over Tennessee on Sept. 10, Smith is one of the keys to the Steelers’ 3-4 alignment and primary run stoppers.

According to Coach Mike Tomlin, first-round draft pick Ziggy Hood is not yet ready to replace Smith, instead, Travis Kirschke and Nick Eason would be used at Smith’s spot.
